Ideas4business Unity 101 and SBGN – #15 – “Researching”

Lilly David TerryThere are many away to research your business idea when you are starting up. Unfortunately many people don’t do enough research which can lead to problems – lots of competitors, p[ricing is wrong, not a clear idea of your market …
Terry  Murphy from Grasshoppers Don’t Walk says  “If you don’t know what people want, who wants it, how much they are prepared to pay for it, you probably won’t have a very successful business. It can be done through trial and error, but most of us don’t have the time and money to make too many false starts.
With thorough research, a business can be set up to hit the market effectively and with rapid take up.
If you don’t know your competition, you won’t easily be able to explain why a customer should buy from you rather than the business next door. As usual the programme is available on Listen again on Unity 101 with David Vane from SBGN and Lilly Aroroa from Unity 101

Today  on ideas4business we heard Alison John from Space -Qube telling us about the ins and outs of setting up a pop up shop. “Many people think that you just set up in the street and then disappear when you have sold something! ” said Alison, the creator of Space-Qube.

What does this mean for small businesses?

start ups“In terms of big business Labour created a negative stigma of those making a profit – which would dis-encourage UK inward investment and also the arrival of Ed Miliband at 10 Downing St would have worried many IT contractors – who make such a valuable contribution to the digital economy.

“The Conservatives made a number of references in their manifesto towards supporting the digital economy – notably of benefit to entrepreneurs and start-ups, saying: ‘More tech companies are starting up here than anywhere else in Europe.’ They also promised to ‘back the financial technology revolution’ and pledged to make the UK the ‘best place in Europe to innovate, patent new ideas and set up and expand a business’ as well as ‘make Britain the technology centre of Europe’.

“In perspective a Conservative government is likely to encourage the tech sector far greater than any of the other parties which is positive for untapping the massive sector potential.”

What is the value of new businesses getting together?

people croppedSolent Business Growth Network is a cluster of small business owners who support new and existing businesses and have recently been involved in supporting new businesses who are applying to SWIG Start up Loans.

It is generally considered that starting your own business can be risky and many fail within the first few years. But SBGN has introduced a number of meetings across the south where new business owners can meet and share ideas and receive some support from SBGN Trusted Partners.

Ideas4business and The Enterprise Club Southampton started last year to offer help and support toVideo capture people who have an idea for a business or who are not sure how to start and SBGN has helped over 100 people over the last 12 months. The ideas4business sessions are held in Southampton and Winchester Libraries and we are hoping to offer the same service in Portsmouth Library soon  and they are open to anyone who would like some help and advice.

The ‘SWIG’ meetings are held in Bournemouth, Southampton, Andover and Portsmouth for business owners who have just started and offer the opportunity to meet other new businesses and get some support from the SBGN network. The sessions are relaxed and friendly and include a presentation from a variety of speakers.

Here is a quote from an attendee –

David,
It was a good meeting and nice to meet others in the same position and status as myself within the business start-up process. I wish everyone the best of luck and look forward to meeting everyone again.
