Small businesses are propping up the UK economy? Are you?

Small businesses are making big money for the UK economy, according to a study of the cities with the best potential for SMEs. Some £16 billion will be generated annually by the British cities which have the best growth prospects for SMEs, with more than 200,000 jobs created by 2020 in the UK economy, according to a report by npower Business and Capital Economics.

Bristol is a key SME city for the UK economy

Bristol is a key SME city for the UK economy

SMEs are already keeping more than half of people in the UK in work, with 16.8 million people clocking in to one daily.

This size business accounts for almost four fifths of the increase in private sector employment since 2010, contributing significantly to the UK economy and employment growth.

Capital Economics expects the British economy to grow at an average of around 2 per cent over the next five years, despite the dampened national growth forecasts following the recent vote to leave the EU.

The npower Business SME Growth Forecast Index has identified the City of London, Bristol, Leeds, Birmingham, Brighton and Hove, and Manchester as the cities with best potential for SMEs in the next five years. Workforce skills, property costs, government policy and broadband speed are just some of the key factors that influence the underlying business environment that is vital for supporting SME growth.

Ideas4business – Unity101 and SBGN – “Whats next…”

David Lilly PaulLily Arora (Unity 101) and David Vane(SBGN) have been presenting a series of programmes on Unity 101 community hour about starting your own business. And this week they talked with Paul Booth from Operational Synergy about how to take the next step once you have been running your business for a while. Many businesses reach a plateau when they need to grow and their owners have to make some tough decisions about how they move forwards.

“Many people start their businesses because they are good at something, a hobby or an interest but when it comes to growing the business past 18 months or 2 years there can be problems” said Paul “It is then when a mentor or coach can be very useful to help and guide the owners to develop their ideas.” (SBGN has a number of mentors who are available)

SBGN invite you to meet an adviser at the Small Business Information Desk in the Central Library – go to SBGN events – ideas4business and click the link at the bottom of the page

FSB survey from the Big Voice – female business owners…

womanLast July, we spoke to female business owners in the UK about the challenges they face when running a business. We found that the biggest challenge was maintaining a work and family life balance (40%), followed by achieving credibility for their business (37%). A third of female business owners also said they had experienced gender discrimination in the workplace, with this being more prominent in certain industries such as construction. These findings have helped FSB to launch a Women in Enterprise Taskforce, which will support female business owners and entrepreneurs. We have also partnered with Facebook to help support female entrepreneurs.

Why do so many start ups fail?? 45% in the first 2 years?

It is a damming fact but nearly 50% of start up businesses fail in the first two years. If enterprise and ideas are so important why is this happening?
There are a number of reasons why entrepreneurs see their fledgling businesses falter. Theo Paphitis says “They haven’t done the research, they don’t know where to go for the right funding … it’s rarely one thing.” However there is a common theme, “The reason people fail is because they don’t do their homework.” You wouldn’t sit an exam without doing any preparation, he points out. “A business is no different. It’s about knowing more than the next guy or girl and performing better, and the only way you can do that is through knowledge. It’s basic stuff but we don’t do it.” (read more…)

So what can YOU do to try to avoid this embarrassing frustrating position? Here are a few ideas –

  • do some proper research – do people really want to buy your product or service
  • get a mentor or someone who can help you – you won’t know it all!
  • find people who you can collaborate with – you can’t do it all – do what YOU do best!
  • make sure you have a good funding strategy – you can’t build a sustainable business without money!

Being an entrepreneur can be risky but if you get some of the above in place it can work!

Ideas4business with Unity 101 radio and SBGN in community hour #11 – Pop up shops…

Alison Lilly DavidWhat is  pop up shop?  You may have heard the term but do you know what it really is? Today  on ideas4business we heard Alison John from Space -Qube telling us about the ins and outs of setting up a pop up shop. “Many people think that you just set up in the street and then disappear when you have sold something! ” said Alison, the creator of Space-Qube.

She originally started as an interior designer and set up her own business 15 years ago and currently has contracts with many large organisations but she has been working on the idea of Pop Up Shops for three years. “People don’t realise that is exactly the same as setting up a normal business with all of the legal, technical and  personnel issues and you should take 3-4 months planning the whole project” said Alison. We had many more useful tips that you can hear on Unity 101’s listen again programme

FSB to launch Women in Enterprise Taskforce

The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) is to create a taskforce dedicated to supporting women entrepreneurs and business owners.

The FSB has examined the specific challenges faced by women-led businesses in a recent survey of 1,900 women business owners in the UK. The findings have been published in a new report, Women in Enterprise: The Untapped Potential, which makes recommendations for improving support, developing mentoring networks and increasing the diversity of business ambassadors.

While the report finds that women-led businesses face many of the same challenges that all small firms encounter – including cash flow problems (42%) and difficulty accessing finance (25%) – some issues are more acute for women business owners. These include: balancing work and family life (40%), achieving credibility for the business (37%) and a lack of confidence (22%). All of these factors, says the FSB, are limiting women’s ability to start, run and grow their businesses.

Helen Walbey, FSB diversity policy chair, said: “Getting more women into business is critical for a dynamic and vibrant small business sector. That’s why we need to work out what the barriers are for women and break them down one by one.” read more here …

More support needed for scale up businesses …

Telegraph Monday: The report, Scale-up UK: Growing Businesses, Growing our Economy, which has been produced by Barclays, follows research both into scale-ups themselves and the broader environment in which they operate. In particular, it concentrates on two areas – what more can be done to enhance finance options for high-growth businesses and how to support the development of the management skills needed to drive this growth.

The Scale-up UK report examines what more can be done to enhance finance options for high-growth businesses. When a business is experiencing fast-paced growth, accelerating in sales and employees quarter after quarter, challenges emerge and there are issues to handle. It matters not whether the company is a Midlands manufacturer, a financial services company in London, an oil and gas producer in Scotland or a northern retailer, their leaders face similar challenges and need support in hiring, procuring, financing and office space.
