Ideas4business with Unity 101 radio and SBGN in community hour #14 Quilley School Enterprise

Quilley logoThis week we had some pupils and teachers from Quilley School, Eastleigh talking about their experiences with their Quilley Enterprise Project. This involved over 200  pupils from three year groups working with local business owners which included members from FSB and SBGN and Sainsburys (Hedge End). “The project is part of the student’s enrichment activities that we run every year and it gives them a break from the usual routine  and this time we wanted to introduce them to the idea of enterprise” said Mrs Goodridge, assistant head teacher.

IMG_2596There were many good ideas but the final winners who were chosen by the ‘dragons’ were “Book Huggers” with an idea for a book mark which helped dyslexic people using coloured overlays, In second place was a group who had an idea for Bespoke Perfumed Bottles and in third place Fruiti Fresh Smoothies which used natural ingredients.  All of the students had to elect officers (MD, Marketing etc) and then create a business plan and do research and create marketing plans as well as present the idea to their peers.

All of the dragons agreed that the groups had worked hard on their ideas. We invited the winners to the studio to talk on community hour and their mentor for the project Paul Marsh from Century IT phoned in to give his feedback. “They were all winners and I hope that more businesses will get involved with helping schools and colleges to have this experience” said Paul  If you are interested in helping in schools and colleges please contact us on enterprise@sbgn.co.uk

The community hour was presented by Lilly Arora (Unity 101) and David Vane (SBGN) and if you would like to hear it you can listen hear – Listen again

New app for refugees and locals translates in real-time …

Europe is in the middle of a major refugee crisis, with more than one million migrants arriving in 2015 alone. Now, developers in Stockholm are coming up with new ways for arrivals to integrate into their new homes.

Welcome! is an app based in Sweden, a country that has operated a broadly open policy to immigration in recent years. The developers say the app aims to break down social and language barriers between Swedes and refugees. Welcome! is translated into Arabic, Persian, Swedish and English, and it enables users to create, host and join activities, as well as ask questions of locals, chat with new contacts, and browse events that are nearby.

The idea is to solve one of the major difficulties for immigrants arriving in Europe by encouraging the new arrivals and locals to interact and connect, helping the refugees to settle in. The app offers real-time auto-translation through its four languages, and can be downloaded for iOS and Android. read more..

Business Idea #16 – Smart Products

Starting a smart products company: Why it’s a good business idea

As The Rise of the Smart Product Economy report authored by Cognizant’s Euan Davis in conjunction with The Economist Intelligence Unit says by way of introduction: “Making products smart can deliver game-changing innovation, enriched customer experiences and new, across-the board levels of efficiency.” smart-products

If you stick a sensor in something and Bluetooth-enable it you make it ‘smart’ and as the fittech business opportunity demonstrates there’s potential benefit to making almost every accessory smart. Enthusiasts are now monitoring their activity and vitals via smartwatches, headphones, sports clothing, footwear, and the scales they weigh themselves on post-workout.

Juniper Research estimates that the global wearables market alone will be worth $80bn by 2020. That’s small fry compared the value of the overall Internet of Things (IoT) market, encompassing wearables, which IDC predicts will be worth $1.7 trillion by 2020.

Business Idea #15 – Venue Booking Platform

Starting a venue booking platform: Why it’s a good business idea

In its European Consumer Trends 2016 report, Mintel noted that a rising number of millennial entrepreneurs are creating sharing economy solutions that seek to “maximise the usage and availability of temporary, transient space for storage, parking, working and sleeping.” business-ideas-for-2016-venue-booking-platform

While businesses like Airnnb, “unhotel” Onefinestay, and home exchange club LoveHomeSwapfound success in targeting travellers and holiday makers, new offerings which target companies and business owners are now entering the market in response to the dwindling supply of UK office space. Vrumi has already secured major press coverage and almost £1m in crowdfunding with its service which enables users to rent out unused space – such as a lounge or dining room – for a few hours per day.

Launched in December 2014, Vrumi’s proposition is ideal for entrepreneurs looking for workspace and companies looking for alternative meeting rooms. The company has also pointed out that there are far more opportunities than just booking office space such as booking a room to run a yoga service, or even hosting an alternative lunch session with friends.

Business Idea #14 – Fitness Franchise

Starting a fitness franchise: Why it’s a good business idea

With franchises said to have a 15% higher five-year survival rate than start-ups, and one in five consumers more likely to buy a product or service from a franchise according to a recent report, it remains a solid business opportunity for 2016. Franchises also tend to generate profits almost from the off. According to a recent survey by NatWest, 97% of franchisees interviewed were profitable.

There’s somewhat of a misconception that becoming a franchisee is for the less-ambitious, would-be-entrepreneur too. On the contrary, the current market shows that while the number of franchisees has actually declined, this is because each franchisee is taking on more units. One in five existing franchisees are expected to grow their operations in the next 12 months.

And this growth pattern is particularly evident in the health and fitness sector, with Pure Gym a shining example. The fitness chain is speculated to be preparing for a whopping £500m stock flotation.

Business Idea #13 – Activity Bar

Starting an activity bar: Why it’s a good business idea

According to BDO’s report “expenditure in restaurants and bars is increasing more than any other consumer-focused sector”, but to stay ahead of the curve “new entrants to the market are launching enticing new propositions to consumers – and shaking up the traditional market considerably.”

With the myriad of bar, restaurants and entertainment options available, offering a truly unique experience will set you apart from competition and help to sway wavering consumers into trying something new. Close up of people playing table tennis.

A report from Mintel in August 2015 on the leisure habits of millennials found that the younger generation are “constantly on the lookout for new experiences, which can be as simple as trying a new type of food or going to a pub quiz”. In its survey of 1,000 UK internet users aged 16-35, it indicated there would demand for alternative bars offering food tasting, footgolf, and even Netflix streaming:

The clear advantage of an all-in-one service for food, drink and entertainment is being able to drive revenue through a number of different sources and keeping customers on site, spending, for longer. Not having to rely solely on one offering allows you to more easily experiment with different elements of your business without having to worry about failure.

Business Idea #12 – Online Watch Shop

Starting an online watch shop: Why it’s a good business idea

Although scepticism of new technology has resulted in slow initial sales of smartwatches – 6% of Brits currently own one – Mintel’s research found that 21% would be interested in buying a smartwatch in the future, with this figure rising to 28% for 25-34 year-olds.

With the Internet-of-Things (IoT) increasingly becoming part of our everyday lives, smartwatches are sure to benefit as consumers are turned on to the convenience of controlling everything from their wrists. Nowhere is this more evident than with contactless payments, with 25% of consumers stating that they would use a smartwatch to pay for goods in a store.

The report also found a direct link between affluence and watch ownership, with 81% of households with an income over £50,000 owning a watch compared to 65% of those with an income of under £15,500. As the economy continues to improve, watches are likely to see uptake amongst younger consumers looking for a fashion accessory or status symbol; over a quarter of Brits have said they would wear a watch as a fashion statement.

Business Idea #11 – Edtech

Starting an edtech company: Why it’s a good business idea

Given that there are over 1,000 edtech businesses in the UK currently, you might question the validity of edtech as a business opportunity for 2016. But, while the industry is growing, there are still definite gaps in the market for edtech start-ups with a niche focus.

business-ideas-for-2016-edtechJust last week at the inaugural EdTech Forum -headed by Baroness Martha Lane Fox, Henry Lane-Fox, Brent Hoberman and Jim Meyerle – the launch of the Founders Factory was announced; a corporate-backed accelerator and incubator programme which has dedicated its first cohort to “the next big things in edtech”.

In the latest UK Education Market Opportunity Report, it suggested that demand for edtech is only going to increase as schools and colleges face “enormous” pressure to adjust their ways of teaching and approaches to education for “today’s learners and tomorrow’s”. The report stated that “there is clear evidence that schools continue to seek the best technology, educational content, and resources”.
