Small businesses are propping up the UK economy? Are you?

Small businesses are making big money for the UK economy, according to a study of the cities with the best potential for SMEs. Some £16 billion will be generated annually by the British cities which have the best growth prospects for SMEs, with more than 200,000 jobs created by 2020 in the UK economy, according to a report by npower Business and Capital Economics.

Bristol is a key SME city for the UK economy

Bristol is a key SME city for the UK economy

SMEs are already keeping more than half of people in the UK in work, with 16.8 million people clocking in to one daily.

This size business accounts for almost four fifths of the increase in private sector employment since 2010, contributing significantly to the UK economy and employment growth.

Capital Economics expects the British economy to grow at an average of around 2 per cent over the next five years, despite the dampened national growth forecasts following the recent vote to leave the EU.

The npower Business SME Growth Forecast Index has identified the City of London, Bristol, Leeds, Birmingham, Brighton and Hove, and Manchester as the cities with best potential for SMEs in the next five years. Workforce skills, property costs, government policy and broadband speed are just some of the key factors that influence the underlying business environment that is vital for supporting SME growth.

Ideas4business – Unity101 and SBGN – “Whats next…”

David Lilly PaulLily Arora (Unity 101) and David Vane(SBGN) have been presenting a series of programmes on Unity 101 community hour about starting your own business. And this week they talked with Paul Booth from Operational Synergy about how to take the next step once you have been running your business for a while. Many businesses reach a plateau when they need to grow and their owners have to make some tough decisions about how they move forwards.

“Many people start their businesses because they are good at something, a hobby or an interest but when it comes to growing the business past 18 months or 2 years there can be problems” said Paul “It is then when a mentor or coach can be very useful to help and guide the owners to develop their ideas.” (SBGN has a number of mentors who are available)

SBGN invite you to meet an adviser at the Small Business Information Desk in the Central Library – go to SBGN events – ideas4business and click the link at the bottom of the page

If you would like to hear any of the programmes please go to Unity 101 Listen again

FSB survey from the Big Voice – female business owners…

womanLast July, we spoke to female business owners in the UK about the challenges they face when running a business. We found that the biggest challenge was maintaining a work and family life balance (40%), followed by achieving credibility for their business (37%). A third of female business owners also said they had experienced gender discrimination in the workplace, with this being more prominent in certain industries such as construction. These findings have helped FSB to launch a Women in Enterprise Taskforce, which will support female business owners and entrepreneurs. We have also partnered with Facebook to help support female entrepreneurs.

Ideas4business – Unity101 and SBGN – ” Men and women in business..”

Jane David Lilly MartinIs there a difference between how men and women work in business” This was the questions put to Martin and Jane Samuel in our 16th programme of ideas4business. Jane and  Martin have both worked in corporate situations in their careers but now work together as accountants and business consultants for their own business The Helpful Bean Counter . We all agreed that there was a difference in the way that men and women work in business but it should seen as a way to complement each other rather than compete.  Presenter Lilly Arora (Unity 101) and David Vane (SBGN) agreed that there were probably more pressures on the person looking after the children whilst trying to work, If you would liek to listen to the programme go to Unity 101 listen again

Ideas4business Unity 101 and SBGN – #15 – “Researching”

Lilly David TerryThere are many away to research your business idea when you are starting up. Unfortunately many people don’t do enough research which can lead to problems – lots of competitors, p[ricing is wrong, not a clear idea of your market …
Terry  Murphy from Grasshoppers Don’t Walk says  “If you don’t know what people want, who wants it, how much they are prepared to pay for it, you probably won’t have a very successful business. It can be done through trial and error, but most of us don’t have the time and money to make too many false starts.
With thorough research, a business can be set up to hit the market effectively and with rapid take up.
If you don’t know your competition, you won’t easily be able to explain why a customer should buy from you rather than the business next door. As usual the programme is available on Listen again on Unity 101 with David Vane from SBGN and Lilly Aroroa from Unity 101

Ideas4business with Unity 101 radio and SBGN in community hour #14 Quilley School Enterprise

Quilley logoThis week we had some pupils and teachers from Quilley School, Eastleigh talking about their experiences with their Quilley Enterprise Project. This involved over 200  pupils from three year groups working with local business owners which included members from FSB and SBGN and Sainsburys (Hedge End). “The project is part of the student’s enrichment activities that we run every year and it gives them a break from the usual routine  and this time we wanted to introduce them to the idea of enterprise” said Mrs Goodridge, assistant head teacher.

IMG_2596There were many good ideas but the final winners who were chosen by the ‘dragons’ were “Book Huggers” with an idea for a book mark which helped dyslexic people using coloured overlays, In second place was a group who had an idea for Bespoke Perfumed Bottles and in third place Fruiti Fresh Smoothies which used natural ingredients.  All of the students had to elect officers (MD, Marketing etc) and then create a business plan and do research and create marketing plans as well as present the idea to their peers.

All of the dragons agreed that the groups had worked hard on their ideas. We invited the winners to the studio to talk on community hour and their mentor for the project Paul Marsh from Century IT phoned in to give his feedback. “They were all winners and I hope that more businesses will get involved with helping schools and colleges to have this experience” said Paul  If you are interested in helping in schools and colleges please contact us on enterprise@sbgn.co.uk

The community hour was presented by Lilly Arora (Unity 101) and David Vane (SBGN) and if you would like to hear it you can listen hear – Listen again

Ideas4business with Unity 101 radio and SBGN in community hour #12 – prospecting on the phone..

Ever heard yourself saying to your people “Pick up the phones and prospect!!”  You will either have sales people who are reluctant or not overly motivated to pick up the phone to prospect, often they will fritter away time on researching, validating, emailing or other avoidance behaviour?  This is how Benjamin Dennehy from Sandler Training sells his workshop “Prospecting on the phone

Most of us have, at sometime, had problems with this  and if you are a new start up it is probably one of David Vane Lilly Arora Benjamin Dennehy.gthe most difficult things that you will have to do! Once it was called ‘cold calling’ – the very words send people into spasms! So it was interesting to hear that it is all the fault of your mother or father! Benjamin says that we are affected by scripted programmed behaviour – we are brought up – not to talk to strangers, don’t interrupt … to always answer questions…  and these disable the sales person on the phone (Yes you are a sales person if you are running your business) To hear more go to Unity 101 listen again

If you would like to know more about this topic but via a lively and entertaining workshop Benjamin is running a Boot Camp on May 31st Book here  but there are only 10 places so book now!

This has been part of ideas4business in the Unity 101  Community Hour
